Windows Mobile 6 SIP

With Windows Mobile 6 Microsoft has implemented a SIP client into the phone application of the PDA Phone.

This client can be used with a local Swyxware server (and with other SIP providers on the internet).

The problem is that Microsoft didn't add any configuration options into the Windows version.

It was probably only intended to be configured by the Phone companies selling the phones.

There is a way to get all the needed settings to the phone by creating an XML file with the configuration, packing it in a CAB file and deploy this file to the phone. Not very convenient for all day use.

But there is a sollution to all of this.

Someone by the name of  'Shaun33' has created a configuration tool that makes it possible to enter all the needed settings and use the phone as a (simple) SIP phone.

The SIP phone is the same as the GSM phone (the phone application on the device). It is possible to select one of three settings for use:

The last option obviously disables the SIP client

The first and second option determine whether the SIP client or the GSM phone will be used for outgoing calls.

The selection to use SIP or GSM (when both are available) is via the Home Screen:

Selected means that a SIP connection is available and selected (duh...) and Available means it's available but not selected.

This results in the following GSM situations:

(Note KPN is my GSM operator in the Netherlands)

The phone behaves similar in both cases. All the settings like ringtones, etc. are the same.

There is a catch (of course)...

The SIP client can only be used when there is a (Wifi) network connection to the SIP provider (Swyxware server). This is only the case if the PDA is activated (not in stand-by).

So to be able to make (and get) calls with the SIP client, the network connection (and the PDA) need to be 'on' all the time.

The configuration tool can be downloaded for free at this addres:

Here's a screenshot with the settings:

The tool is still under development and should be updated with new features soon.

(Like editing the configuration of the Dialplan.xml file)
