Moving Swyx Database to another server (only the DB!)  (Switzerland)

Hello again!

One customer has several servers.. now he asked me, if I could move the Swyx DB from the Swyx server to his database server..

I spent some time on this.. and my idea was, to run the config wizard again.. and then on the " connect to sql server"-screen,
I would just change the location from (lokal)\SQLEXPRESS to databaseserver\Swyx...

If I don't have any problems with not enough rights.. should this work?

Thanks..

spyker

Re: Moving Swyx Database to another server (only the DB!)  (Germany)

The account you're using to access the SQLServer (first SQL login you specify in ConfigWizard) must have db_owner rights on the database (It's not necessary to have a SQLServer administrative role). The second SQL login you enter in ConfigWizard is the account SwyxWare later uses to access the database. Make sure that the login exists on the SQLServer. ConfigWizard will configure the SQL login as user in the database and sets proper access permissions.

Summary:

First SQL login in ConfigWizard: Connects to the SQLServer for administration. Needs to have db_owner rights on the existing database.

Second SQL login in ConfigWizard: Used later by SwyxWare to access the database. Login must exist before ConfigWizard runs. Database user roles are configured by ConfigWizard.

First of all it might not be that easy to backup a SQLEXPRESS database and restore it on a SQL 2005 Server. I have tried it a couple of times and it fails for not finding the correct paths. Searching the Net it seems that this is a limitation of the SQLEXPRESS.

Do you run into problems when you are retoring the database onto the SQL server, or do you manage to do that?

UPDATE: I deleted my original text here, as Martin gave a better explanation. We seemed to write it at the same time, look at the post time

I 'm sure it's possible. All MSSQLServer backups contain the complete paths of the database file and transaction log file. If you just try to restore a DB from one server to another these paths might be wrong on the new server.

When you're using SwyxWare's restore.wsf script you can specify the paths to use with parameters /m and /l. When using ConfigWizard that's done automatically. In spyker's scenario using ConfigWizard is not possible, however, because the SQLServer is on another system. But that's no problem, because SQLServer Management Studio allows changing the paths during restore, too.

You are right. I tried this now with a IpPbx database from a SwyxServer running Express locally. I did manage to restore it on my SQL 2005 Server. There must have been some other dependencies in the databases I had problems with.
