Our life, or to be more correct, our memories from life is now a matter of bits and bytes. How to protect yourself from digital Alzheimer.

I am probably not alone. We all store more and more of our lifes on the computer. The CDs are converted to MP3, all our pictures are digital and even all my videorecordings of my daughter is on the harddrive.

In the good old analog world you could be losing all your tapes, photographic albums and VHS cassettes in a matter of minutes if your house burned down or other natural disasters stroke. To be honest, all it takes now is some PC disaster and you will have a not so wanted fresh start in life.

The upside of digital is that it is easier to protect yourself. You do not need to store the valuable memories in a bank, you can make backups. Well if it is that easy, why do we never have a backup when we need one.

I have just found the perfect solution, at least for my needs. I now use the program PowerFolder Professional. It will run on your computer and monitor the folders of your choice. Currently I am monitoring my Music, Pictures and Document folder. Whenever I edit a file or add new files to those folders, I can rest assure that PowerFolder will back it up using a secure connection over the Internet to my server at work, were I added a 500 Gbyte harddrive for this purpose. I do not have to think about it at all.

It is not free, but I think it was worth every euro.
