In the help menu a new item “Check for new version” opens the update check URL we have in the support info shown in the Add/Remove Programs control panel applet. It looks like this: http://www.swyx.com/support/update.html?product=SwyxIt!&version=6.20.0120.0&language=9 Only the parameter in the above URL are transmitted, nothing else. But there’s a drawback. Once you’ve installed SwyxIt! you cannot switch off that menu item. Some colleagues (me included :-) ) suggested that there likely are administrators who do not want this functionality. Product management’s reasoning was like “without administrative rights the user can’t install anyway, but a little advertising for the new version doesn’t hurt”. Fortunately there is a way to omit that menu entry when installing or updating SwyxIt. It’s not comfortable, but it works. Instead of double-clicking the executable open a command-prompt and execute: msiexec /i SwyxIt!EnglishUK64.msi /l*vx swyxit.log ARPURLUPDATEINFO=""That command-line clears the property ARPURLUPDATEINFO. The logging parameter /l*vx swyxit.log is optional. Alternatively use a Windows Installer transformation. I cannot attach files. Contact me directly and I’ll send you the mst file. Tags: |
