v6.20 You might have already recognized when you’re testing SwyxWare v6.20 Beta. There are some new hyperlinks in SwyxIt. The one on the skin selection dialog opens your default web browser and navigates to the skin download page on the Swyx website.

In the help menu a new item “Check for new version” opens the update check URL we have in the support info shown in the Add/Remove Programs control panel applet. It looks like this:

http://www.swyx.com/support/update.html?product=SwyxIt!&version=6.20.0120.0&language=9

Only the parameter in the above URL are transmitted, nothing else. But there’s a drawback. Once you’ve installed SwyxIt! you cannot switch off that menu item. Some colleagues (me included :-) ) suggested that there likely are administrators who do not want this functionality. Product management’s reasoning was like “without administrative rights the user can’t install anyway, but a little advertising for the new version doesn’t hurt”.

Fortunately there is a way to omit that menu entry when installing or updating SwyxIt. It’s not comfortable, but it works. Instead of double-clicking the executable open a command-prompt and execute:

msiexec /i SwyxIt!EnglishUK64.msi /l*vx swyxit.log ARPURLUPDATEINFO=""

That command-line clears the property ARPURLUPDATEINFO. The logging parameter /l*vx swyxit.log is optional. Alternatively use a Windows Installer transformation. I cannot attach files. Contact me directly and I’ll send you the mst file.
