Today I'm updating our main development server which runs Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server to the newest version Visual Studio 2008 Team Foundation Server. Don't wonder about the names. That seems to happen when marketing guys get involved :-) I'll keep a log about how it goes. Here it is.

Today I'm updating our main development server which runs Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server to the newest version Visual Studio 2008 Team Foundation Server. Don't wonder about the names. That seems to happen when marketing guys get involved :-) I'll keep a log about how it goes. Here it is.

11:20 Arrived at the office

11:25 Read the update instructions again. Started to perform the mentioned pre-update check. The database have been backup up during the last night.

11:30 Placed the installation DVD into the server. Back in the office. Logged into the server via remote desktop. Installation media not visible "Please enter a disk into drive Z:".

11:31 Back from the server room with the DVD. The server only has a CD-ROM drive. Started copying the DVD content onto the server's hard disk via network from my PC

11:33 Start uninstalling the old version.

11:34 Uninstall and copying of the DVD is rather slow. Disabled virus scanner on the server.

11:38 Copying of the DVD contents and removal of the old version finished

11:39 Start installation of TFS 2008. The usual product key entering, license agreement confirmation stuff. Then the setup does a lot of pre-installation checks.

11:42 Everything is ok. I click next and updating starts

11:48 Now the database update is in progress:

tfsupdate_updvcdb

I'll go getting a coffee...

11:53 Still updating:

tfsupdate_upddb2

11:55 Database update complete. Update continues:

tfsupdate_upd3

11:58 Progress bar still at the same position. Is there something wrong?

12:00 Task manager still shows activity. Some processes start and finish.

12:01 Finished.

tfsupdate_upd_finish

Server needs a restart. That may take a while

12:07 Server can be pinged again. Cannot be long until I can logon again...

12:10 I can access the file shares. RDP still not working

12:12 Now login works.

12:13 I can access the server from my desktop system using Visual Studio 2005.

12:16 Now I'll install Team Explorer 2008 on the server for administration

12:21 While that runs I'll use the Sharepoint Service pre-upgrade scan tool as instructed in the upgrade manual.

12:22 Prescan.exe found no error in the existing sharepoint sites, but complained about some additional non-sharepoint web sites hosted on the server. Should be no problem. Team Explorer 2008 setup has finished in the meantime

12:30 The upgrade instruction for the sharepoint service are quite confusing. It looks like sharepoint services are not part of the TFS 2008 DVD.

12:35 After some searching in the manual I found the sharepoint setup. It's located at \at\wcu\wss on the TFS2008 DVD.

12:38 Sharepoint setup ran without problems. Now the "Sharepoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard" runs. That should update the existing team system sharepoint sites.

12:43 The wizard completed without error. Now the real upgrade seems to be performed in background. The Sharepoint Central Administration website shows progress.

12:46 Upgrade succeeded. Our team's website is accessible again. Looks like everything is working again.

13:03 Now the last remaining step for today is the update of our build server

13:32 I've updated the build server and our internal Team System Web Access website. Now I'm checking if the build system works. I'll probably recreated the build configurations to profit from the new team build features. But that's a task for Monday.

Altogether a successful update. I'm feeling relieved.

Re: TFS2008

If I do that on a weekday and nobody can work for several hours I'll offer an excuse for everybody to not meet deadlines :-)

This way everybody can continue working on Monday morning, because there's no update necessary on the client systems.
