Today, 30 years ago Star Wars Episode IV, "A New Hope" was released in Germany. George Lucas took a great risk. Sci-Fi movies were not very popular in the 1970s and the three leading roles were played by unknown actors. But it was a great success. It held a 20 year record from 1977-1997 as the highest-grossing box office film in US history until Titanic. And Lucas was smart in negotiating with 20th Century Fox. Instead of asking for a lot of money he insisted on getting 40% of the net box-office gross, all rights to future sequels and ownership of all the merchandising rights associated with Star Wars. It made him a multi millionaire. I was too young to see Episode IV in cinema in 1978, but I clearly remember seeing Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back in our local movie theater in 1980. IMHO Episode V still is the best of all six Star Wars movies. May the force be with you... Tags: 1 comment(s) so far...
Re: 30th Anniversary Back in the days of the late 70s and early 80s it was far out of question to get permission from my parents to see any of the Star Wars movies in the cinema. Back I inhaled everything that was connected to it and within my reach. So actually I grew up with seeing all three Star Wars episodes on VHS first.
Some years ago, I think 1 year before Episode 1 came into the movies, George Lukas gave me (and I think a lot of others as well) a real huge favor: he digitally remastered the first three films and brought them back into the movies. I enjoyed all three of them in a Star Wars Movie Night in a huge cinema in Cologne. It was fantastic !
I have to admit that I am more like a Treky than a Star Wars fan, but these films really formed a generation !
So I repeat the famous saying "may the force be with you", but from even deeper in my heart "to boldly go where no man has ever gone before!" ;-)
