Anyone who has even only played for a short time with Swyx understands how powerful it is, and that its potential is limited only by the imagination. The only problem is we haven’t all come from a data / programming background and even the simplest of scripts in the beginning seem daunting. I know the first time I looked at some of Toms early stuff I thought I was out of my depth.... but, the good news is it’s very easy really. Just take it easy, one step at a time and you will soon be able to add value to Swyx.
So over time I will submit some small ideas, building blocks that can then be taken and used as modules in your own projects. So with a little bit of lateral thinking we take the basic scripts Tom wrote for the Swyx Knowledge base, showing for example how to check for bank holidays and change this into a Night Service Function for Swyx.
By getting an understanding of the basics we can then go on to produce the kind of stuff that Tom, Marcus, Thorsten and the other experienced coders contribute.
Like Tom my full time Job at MTV Telecom keeps me very busy, but if you ask a question I will try and get an answer to you... some time.
For the more experienced coders out there that won’t learn anything technical on my blog have a read anyway, hopefully you will get a feeling of what it’s like trying to support this kit in the UK and what people expect from it. Also from those not from a voice background there is an awful lot to pick up about this industry, its amazing how “techies” sometimes can make Swyx do a hundred things.... that no one wants, but fail to understand some basic rules for voice. IVR is a good example.
So the first set will be the Night Service feature. This will start with a simple night service on/off script and will build from there. I will take you through step by step and we’ll see how it goes.
One last thing, there is no such thing as a stupid question. Everyone has to learn and you only do that by asking questions.
So before I start you will need these scripts :

And next time I will show how a combination of the two results in a night service function.
